Today we’re talking about why you should be eating more fat, how much fat to eat, what we consider the best fats to add to your diet, and the fats that you should divorce immediately. Basically if you’re still using skim milk or anything labeled fat-free, we would like to bring you into this millennia. The research is in, and healthy fats, or as we call them, fabulous fats, are crucial to eat and you probably should be eating more than you currently are.

Fats help with:

  • Losing weight
  • Keeping insulin levels stable
  • Hormones and fertility in both men and women
  • Period pain
  • Avoiding early menopause
  • Absorbing nutrients
  • Skin health
  • Brain health (including a reduced risk of dementia)

We suggest a minimum of 1-2 tablespoons of added fat per meal.

Our favorite fabulous fats are:

  • Olive oil (we love Brightland)
  • Avocados
  • MCT oil
  • Chia seeds (we love CocoChia® and chia shots from The Chia Co)
  • Brazil nuts (we love the ones from Terrasoul)
  • Walnuts (we have Old Dog Ranch Walnuts in our shop)
  • Hemp seeds

There are some fats and fat substitutes which you should skip altogether. These include:

  • Trans fats
  • Non-fat or skim dairy products
  • Canola oil (also called rapeseed – a lot of restaurants use this)

People who shouldn’t have too much fat include:

  • Those with gallbladder issues
  • Those who tend to have loose stools

People trying to conceive shouldn’t be on very high-fat diets (for example, keto) because it can disrupt your hormones.
